December 23: Give it Away

Have you ever met incredibly generous people? Usually, they are cheerful and energetic. These people are usually described as joyful, lavish, and whimsical, “someone who will give you the shirt off his back.” Any encounter with these characters transforms and challenges us.

Such was my experience when I met Karla.  We met while touring through Tecate meeting families who received homes last year.  Karla is the personal assistant of Baja California's Congresswoman Nereida Fuentes and as such she has a lot of things on her plate, yet she possesses a great attitude and beautiful personality.  I’ve seen how generous she is when speaking to the families, despite running a tight schedule for the Congresswoman.

New Call-to-action

One day as we were saying goodbye, I quickly complimented on a pair of earrings she was wearing. She immediately took them off and quickly responded “You like them? Here please I want you to have them.”

I was shocked, and a bit embarrassed because it was never my intention to take the earrings from her. But her response was so authentic, that I could not help but to comply. She was truly happy to give them away. Behind this little gesture, hid the secret of her happiness and joy.

‘They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor;   their righteousness endures forever” 2 Cor 9:9

Every time I wear those earrings I remember that moment. Even today when I chose to write about that story to talk about generosity. What a great impact, such a little act of openhandedness. It turns out that most of us are wired to give and our brains reward us for doing so. According to one study we become happier the more money we spend on others. Talk about being generous by design!

By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." John 13:35

During the past 22 days we’ve exhorted you to give more like Jesus by giving your time, compassion, forgiveness, mercy, love and even yourself like never before.

Today’s disruption asks us to respond to a need around us, by giving something freely that is of value to us. You might have the answer right in your hands! Give that item with a joyful heart and see the amazing impact it will create.
